Terry Fox

On September 24th, we participated in the Terry Fox National School Run.  All of our staff and students walked or ran in support of Terry Fox.  Over the week, our students have been bringing in donations for cancer research and learning about Terry Fox.  He has inspired many people to never give up on their dreams.  Thank you to parents, staff, and students for your continued support.

 Room 1 (Grade 1) says: "We are learning about Terry Fox. Terry Fox is special because he ran across Canada to raise money for cancer. He ran to help others because he cared about them. He is very important to all of us. We made a video about Terry Fox to share with you. We hope you like it."

Divisional Youth Forum

Today three Linwood students, Hailey, Abbie and Maxwell attended the 8th annual St. James-Assiniboia Youth Forum.  They were able to hear inspirational guest speakers from various organizations share ideas on how to do good in the world.  The students will work with our Giving Tree Club this year to plan various good deeds that will benefit our local and global communities.  Thank you to Ms. Jensen for being our staff leader!

Free Little Library

Linwood School is lucky to have a  Little Free Library (LFL) on our front lawn.  It is one of a network of over 18,000 LFLs (including at least 25 in Winnipeg) in more than 70 countries.

For our new Linwood families, we'd like to let you know this is a neighbourhood book exchange where children can borrow or leave a book any time.  For our returning families, thank you for using the LFL and for sharing your books with all of us.

Throughout the year, if you are thinning out your children's books, please consider sharing them with the LFL.  Books can be left in the blue donation bins inside the main doors.

WITS Program

At Linwood School, we continue to encourage our students to “Use Their WITS”. This program is designed to help students resolve small conflicts independently and encourages children to seek help from adults.

WITS is an acronym which stands for:

W = Walk away

                I  = Ignore

               T = Talk it out

               S = Seek help

The WITS acronym provides a common language and set of strategies to reduce negative peer interactions. Classroom teachers will deliver lessons connected to stories throughout the year about using the WITS strategies.

Students are taught to seek help right away if they do not feel safe, if someone is hurt or if a problem persists.

Picture Day

Today was Picture Day at Linwood.  We took class photos and got our pictures taken individually.  Proofs of the photos will be delivered to the school and sent home with your child in approximately two weeks time.  Order forms will be included with the proofs.  Retakes will be held on Thursday, October 30th in the AM only.  Parents of students in PM Kindergarten wishing to have retakes are invited to bring their child to school at 9:00 AM and will be first to have their photos taken.

Enjoy a couple of "behind the scenes" shots:

Parent Council

Parent Council is a wonderful way for families to get involved with the school.  There are always volunteer opportunities for parents, many of which can be done from home.

All parents in our community are encouraged to come to Linwood School’s Annual Establishment Meeting which will be held Tuesday, September 9 at 7:00 p.m. A Parent Council or an Advisory Council for school leadership will be established.

If a Parent Council is established, a Parent Council meeting will follow. Nominations for the positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary will be tabled at that time.

We hope you'll join us.

Milk Program

Parent Council will once again be operating the Milk Program.

Any student who is part of the lunch program can purchase a sheet of 10 milk tickets for $7.50 and exchange the tickets for fresh milk at lunch time. You have a choice of white or chocolate, or a combination sheet of white and chocolate.

Milk tickets will be sold on September 9 (this Tuesday) and September 23.  A volunteer from Parent Council will attend each classroom first thing in the morning to collect money for milk tickets, so please remind your child to hand in their money to the teacher upon arrival at school.  Please send exact change or a cheque made payable to Linwood Parent Council in an envelope labeled with your choice of milk and your child’s name and room number on the front.

For students who have milk tickets remaining from last year, milk will be available on Monday.

Beginning in October, we have lined up the milk ticket days with early dismissal days to make it easier to remember.  Please mark these dates on your calendar:

October 7 & 21

November 4 & 18

December 2 & 16

Cross-Country

Cross-Country Club begins on Tuesday, September 9th with Mrs. Chumola and Ms. Palsson leading the pack!  Students in Grades 4 and 5 who like to run are encouraged to join the club! It’s a great way to get some exercise in the morning before school starts!

Interested Grades 4 and 5 students can let their homeroom teacher know on Monday.  These students will be given more detailed information about dates/times and our meets. We’ll run at school two to three times a week to prepare for the divisional meet in October.

Our First Day of School 2014-2015

It was wonderful to see so many of our families out at Opening Conferences on Wednesday and Thursday this week.  We hope you found it to be a valuable experience for staring a great year at school.

Today we had a great first day of regular classes!  We had an assembly to talk about safety and respect, we enjoyed sunshine at recess, and got to meet new students.

We ask that all families take the time to familiarize themselves with the Parent/Student Handbook, located within our blog.  It contains lots of very important information about school routines and procedures.  Below please find one section of the handbook which explains entrance and dismissal procedures at school:

Morning Entrance Procedure Student supervision on the playground begins at 8:45 a.m.  When the entry bell rings, students line up at the doors designated with their room number and duty staff will supervise entry.  In severe weather, students are supervised indoors.

End of Day Dismissal Procedure
The end of the day is always a very busy time. Important end of the day routines are being completed. Many students are making their way to daycare or a school bus line. Staff respectfully request that parents/ caregivers wait at the exit doors designated for their child (ren). This prevents congestion in the hallway and front foyer and helps to ensure the safety of all students.

In severe weather, parents/guardians who are picking up their child (ren) are asked to remain in the front foyer of the school until the bell rings. Once the dismissal bell rings, parents are asked to exit with their child at the designated door.

Designated Entrance/Exit Doors are as Follows:

Front doors on Linwood: Kindergarten students, Patrols, Bus Students

Northwest “Boys” doors on Winchester: Rooms 1, 4, 6, 18

Southwest “Girls” doors on Winchester:  Rooms 8, 10, 15, 16

Enjoy some pictures of our first day.  See everyone on Monday!

Welcome to 2014-2015
