Heating System Update

Work on our replacement heating system continues and, with the cooler weather, we noticed a big difference in the temperature of the school today... it was chilly!  The new system is currently in the testing stage where any issues are found and resolved.  While we are in this stage of the project the Division's Maintenance personnel are being kept informed of progress on the project, as well as the comfort level in the school.  An interim plan for warming the school will be implemented beginning tomorrow.  It is still recommended that students dress in layers for the classroom (hats will be allowed indoors during this period) with additional outdoor clothing as appropriate for the day.

We Scare Hunger!

Giving Tree is collecting food for Winnipeg Harvest as our campaign to scare hunger by Halloween! We have a lot to be thankful for, so we are helping Winnipeggers through Winnipeg Harvest by collecting donations for the food bank from Oct. 11 – Oct. 31^st!

 

Please, bring donations of non-perishable food items to the bins outside room 6.

 

Each room will collect a different item and we will keep track to see which room collects the most items; please see the items listed below.

Vision and Hearing Screening

Vision Screening

Vision Screening will take place at Linwood starting Monday October 24, 2016. Kindergarten, Grades 1, 3, and 5, teacher referrals and students new to the school will be screened. The resource teacher and trained volunteers will assist in the screening.

This screening program is designed to uncover signs of any possible vision difficulty, which may interfere with school progress. It is not intended to be a substitute for the vision examination performed by an Ophthalmologist/Optometrist.

The screening instruments measure a student’s ability to see at far (myopia), at near (hyperopia), and to co-ordinate both eyes (muscle balance).

Children who are currently wearing glasses will not be screened.

After the vision screening has been completed, if you receive a notice from the school requesting that you refer your child for a professional eye examination, please follow-up by making an appointment with an eye doctor (Ophthalmologist/Optometrist) of your choice. Ask the eye doctor to complete the form sent to you by the school and then return this completed form to the school. Children who are referred for an examination may not require glasses.

 Hearing Screening

Hearing screening programs lead to the identification and prevention of ear disease which can cause associated hearing problems, and to the identification of children with educationally significant, temporary or permanent hearing impairments.

The St. James-Assiniboia School Division No.2 has a Hearing Screening Program for students within the Division. The resource teacher, who will be assisted by trained volunteers, will administer this program. The screening program determines if the student can hear specific sound frequencies or tones.

Hearing Screening will take place at Linwood beginning Monday October 24, 2016. The target population includes all students Kindergarten and Grade 1. Teacher referrals and students new to the school are also included in the screening.

Students who do not pass the initial screening, or are absent on the screening day will be re-screened. Any child who does not pass the second screening will have a letter sent from the school to the parent or guardian. The letter asks the parents to contact the Deer Lodge Hearing Centre to make an appointment for their child for a complete hearing test.

Milk Program

Parent Council is seeking out a volunteer who is able to come to the school and sell milk tickets.  If you are interested in learning more about this volunteer opportunity, please call the school office at 889-9356 and we will pass your contact information to the Parent Council.  Thank you.

Bag it Up Linwood!

Team Green is a group of Grade 4/5 students at Linwood who are helping the environment. Team Green is collecting clean plastic bags for recycling. If we collect enough bags, we will receive special items made from the bags, such as Frisbees or maybe even a bench!

• To help, bring your clean plastic bags that you already have at home to your homeroom teacher. Please, don't go to the store to get more bags. Bring reusable bags when you go shopping!


• Bring the bags from October 6th-28th


• We will count the bags after October 30th and have them picked up for recycling!

Story Time with the Principal
